01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Resembling a glass of dark stout when poured, the foamy cold crema coffee is a standout specialty worth trying at the Asakusa kissaten Joy (ジョイ). A fine blanket of foam softens any harshness or bitterness in the iced coffee, yielding a remarkably smooth texture on the palate. Beyond aromatic hot coffee, the drink roster extends from cream sodas to kelp tea served with sweet yokan, setting the tone for a traditional cafe visit the moment you take a seat.

When it comes time for a full meal, the extensive food menu proves equally dependable. Retro kissaten standards abound, anchored by a classic omurice of ketchup-seasoned chicken rice with onions and mushrooms wrapped in egg, alongside substantial fried prawns and Frank Napolitan tossed with thick sausage. Crisp yet chewy pizza toast and customizable mixed hot sandwiches offer lighter options well-suited to breakfast or an early lunch.

Those stopping in for a sweet treat will gravitate toward the firmer custard pudding paired with bittersweet caramel, or the wide selection of cake sets. Distinctive desserts—including a bright red apple cake layered with diced apples, jam, and custard, as well as a rich chestnut cake—pair effortlessly with a cup of coffee. Fitted with retro table arcade cabinets repurposed as dining surfaces alongside relaxed booth seating, the space invites you to linger quietly over a manga or magazine.
